How bright should my LED screen be?

Short answer

Brightness is measured in nits. Indoor screens need about 600–1,200 nits (and usually run lower). Shop windows in the sun need about 2,500–4,500 nits. Outdoor screens in direct UAE sunlight need 5,000–7,000 nits or more. At night every screen should dim automatically.

Why brighter is not always better

  • A screen that is too bright for its room is tiring to look at and washes out colours.
  • Running at full brightness uses more power and shortens the life of LEDs and power supplies.
  • At night, very bright outdoor screens dazzle drivers and neighbours and can break approval conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What does nits mean?

A nit is a unit of brightness — one candela per square metre. A phone screen is roughly 500–1,000 nits.

Is 5,000 nits enough for outdoor in Dubai?

For most façades and roadside screens, 5,000–6,500 nits works well in daytime, provided the screen also has good contrast.

Do LCD screens get as bright as LED?

Standard LCDs reach about 500–700 nits; special high-brightness LCDs reach about 2,500–3,500. Outdoor LED goes much higher.
